Exercise and Osteoporosis

Exercise slows bone loss caused by osteoporosis. Bone loss can lead to bone fractures and ongoing or chronic pain. One activity that you can perform to prevent osteoporosis and slow bone loss is to start weight bearing exercises. Weight bearing exercises include:

  • walking
  • cycling
  • dancing
  • weight training

If your bones and joints are weak, swimming may be a more appropriate form of exercise.

weight bearing exercises Regular exercise of 30 minutes daily should help slow down bone loss. An added benefit of exercise is increased balance, coordination and strength, which may help in preventing falls.
