Observing home safety can reduce your risk of falls. Falls can lead to broken bones in people with osteoporosis as their bones are weak and brittle and cannot support the body's weight during a fall. Home safety assessments performed by yourself, a family member or a visiting nurse can drastically reduce your risk of falls.
Check the following areas in your home:
- Floors - secure loose area rugs and electrical cords
- Lighting - improve lighting, especially on stairs
- Stairways - secure loose banisters
- Bathroom - use a shower chair and add grab bars for toilet and bath
- Kitchen - remove wax on floors and make kitchen items easy to reach
