Preventing Falls: Shoes

The correct shoes can help you to prevent falls and help avoid broken bones in people with osteoporosis. The weakened bones due to osteoporosis are more likely to break as they cannot support a person's body weight during a fall.

Wearing the correct footwear or shoes is one way to help prevent falls. Your shoes should:

  • be tied securely
  • have a flat sole
  • have a wide base
  • have good grip to the ground

Speak to a podiatrist. They can advise you on footwear that will provide good support and balance when walking.
